GG-P0 / Our own platform

Platform

Status: Preview release available

It is what we are building at the studio: a place to play and a tool to create. You play on Green Games, which is the portal play.green.games and also the desktop launcher. You create with Green Games Studio, a simple editor so players themselves can make their games.

Actual status: preview release available. You can already play in the browser and download the launcher and the editor for Windows, Linux and macOS. It is not a finished version: further down is the detail of what works and what is missing, and for what is missing we have no dates to promise.

Play, create and download

  1. GG-P1 Preview release

    Play

There are two ways to play on Green Games: on the portal play.green.games, from the browser, with nothing to install and no account; or with the desktop launcher, which ships the studio’s games to play offline. For now every game is made by the studio.

    • Seven games on the portal, including an open world of cubes with biomes
    • Green Games launcher for Windows, Linux and macOS, to play offline
    • The launcher opens games saved as .ggx files
  2. GG-P2 Preview release

    Create

Green Games Studio is the editor: installable and simpler than a professional tool, so players themselves can make their games. You pick a game type, build the scene, give it rules without writing code, let a bot test it and export it to a file.

    • Game types: third person, first person, 2D platformer, top-down, isometric, 2D / 3D hybrid and open world
    • Rules without code and a test bot that plays your game from start to finish
    • A workshop to draw textures and build cube models with their animations, and an importer for models, textures and sounds made with other tools, with their author and license
    • An assistant you ask for changes in writing; the AI layer ships in the Windows installer, the Linux package and the macOS app, with models you install separately
    • Blocks mode: program by snapping blocks together, with the code they write in view, for those just starting
  3. GG-P3 Preview release

    Download

The Green Games launcher and Green Games Studio are downloaded from the portal, for Windows, macOS and Linux. They are preview releases and the files are not signed: the download page lists the sha256 of each one, so you can check that you got the original.

    • 64-bit Windows: standalone executable or installer
    • macOS: one app for Apple Silicon and one for Intel
    • 64-bit Linux: tar.gz archive

Linux

Names, versions and sizes come from the portal’s download manifest. The sha256 of every file is on the download page.

Preview release

What works and what is missing

Works today

  • Playing seven games in the browser, with nothing to install and no account.
  • Green Games launcher for Windows, Linux and macOS, version 0.4.0: the studio’s games offline, and importing games from .ggx files.
  • Green Games Studio, the editor, for Windows, Linux and macOS, version 0.5.0: scenes, rules without code, your own or imported drawings and 3D models, testing the game and export to a file.

Not yet

  • There are no accounts, no online matches and no online publishing of player-made games: a game is shared as a file. Multiplayer is local: 1 to 4 people on the same computer.
  • AI models are not included: the editor’s Windows installer, Linux package and macOS app ship the AI layer, which uses models you install separately. Without it the basic assistant works.
  • The files are not signed: Windows and macOS will show a warning when you open them.
  • The editor’s Windows installer asks for administrator rights. The launcher’s installs per user and does not ask for them.

How to use it

Step-by-step guides with screenshots of the real apps: play, install the launcher and the editor, make a game without programming and build one with code. Every guide says which version it describes.

The site demos are still here

Besides the platform, this site has demos you can play right now. They are site demos, not the games on the portal. And if you want to ask something, tell us about an idea or report a problem with the preview release, the contact form works.

Straight answers

Direct questions

Can I play and create already?
Yes, as a preview release: you can play in the browser and download the launcher and the editor for Windows, Linux and macOS. There are no accounts, online matches or game publishing yet.
Is Green Games the studio or the place where you play?
Both. Green Games is the studio, and it is also the name of the place where its games are played: the portal play.green.games and the desktop launcher. The editor is called Green Games Studio. Up to version 0.2.0 the platform had another name; games saved with the earlier extension, .gbx, still open.
When is the rest coming out?
We give no date because we do not have one yet. When a piece is ready, it shows up on this page.
Are the demos on this site the games on the portal?
No. They are demos made for this site, showing how we work. The platform’s games live on their own portal, play.green.games.
What does the AI do in the editor?
The editor’s Windows installer, Linux package and macOS app ship an AI layer, which uses models you install separately. Without that layer the basic assistant works. In a game made with blocks the assistant is off.
Why does Windows show a warning when I open the launcher or the editor?
Because the preview release files are not signed. The download page lists the sha256 of every file, so you can check that you got the original.
